There’s nothing quite like working with ink, pen and brush. I love the way a calligraphy pen splatters, scratches and bleeds. Doing the rock/mountain studies in ink is the perfect opportunity to explore the relationship between making abstract marks and representing form.
I felt I was getting too tight with my drawings. In these studies guided by reference, I often started making contours with my left hand. I would then switch to my drawing hand to paint in textures and value.
Friday and Saturday afternoon just flew by with these studies but I feel I have only scratched the surface of both the medium and subject matter. I am inspired by artists like Ni Zan (倪瓚, 1301-1374) who spent a lifetime studying such subjects in ink.
I have not even integrated architectural elements or begun to figure out how to resolve my painting woes. I think that will be tomorrow.
